About Category Sets
A category set is a named list or hierarchy of choices for organizing items. Sets belong to a Trove, and category fields on item types use a selected set. Separate sets let the same Trove use different vocabularies for different purposes—for example, a Treasure Category set and a Condition set.
Categories can be arranged as a tree. A parent can group related child choices, such as Artwork with children Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture. In category fields, users see the hierarchy and can select allowed nodes. A node can also be a non-selectable grouping heading.
Create and edit sets
- Open Customize Item Types for the Trove, then choose Manage Category Sets. Owners and administrators can edit category sets.
- Choose Add Category Set. Give it an internal name without spaces and a display name for users. The internal name is the stable reference used by fields; the display name is the user-facing label.
- Choose Add Root to create a top-level category. Expand a category to edit its name, optional description, active state, selectable state, and order.
- Use + Child to add a nested category. Repeat to build the hierarchy. Deleting a node also deletes all of its children.
- Choose Save Changes to save the Trove's category set definitions. Cancel leaves the editor without saving the pending changes.
Lower order numbers appear first among sibling categories. Keep sibling names distinct so choices are easy to tell apart. Mark a node inactive to disable it in category selectors; mark a node non-selectable when it is only a grouping heading.
Use a set in an item type
- In the item type editor, add a field or select an optional existing field.
- Set its type to CategorySingle if an item should have one choice, or CategoryMulti if it can have several.
- Choose the category set for that field. The field selector uses that set's hierarchy.
For example, a Treasure's Category field uses one value from the Treasure Category set, while a Condition field uses one value from the Condition set. You can use the same set on more than one field when the choices have the same meaning.
Default Treasure sets
New Troves include three sets used by the built-in Treasure type:
- Category — examples include Jewelry, Artwork, Collectible, Furniture, Musical Instrument, and Book. Artwork and Musical Instrument include nested choices.
- Condition — Mint, Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, and Needs Restoration.
- Item Status — Active, Lost, Donated, Sold, and Destroyed.
You can edit these choices to fit your Trove, or create additional sets for your own item types. Choose names that describe the meaning of the set, then reuse a set wherever those same choices make sense.
